Although I’m currently immersed in research and can’t dive into the reading I want just yet, I can at least start preparing my reading list for after my chapter meeting! These four books explore beauty culture and examine makeup from various disciplinary and cultural perspectives. Makeup has often been dismissed as frivolous, only to later be tied to hyperfemininity, framing makeup culture as oppositional to a particular strain of American feminism. For me, makeup has always carried these tensions, and studying it provides an intellectual foundation (pun intended) to explore its profound impact—not only on me as an individual, but also its socio-political significance for women and femme people
Eyeliner: A Cultural History by Zahara Zankir

Seen through Zahra Hankir’s (kohl-lined) eyes, this ubiquitous but seldom-examined product becomes a portal to history, proof both of the stunning variety among cultures across time and space and of our shared humanity.
